The SLS was totally developed in-house. And by in-house, Mercedes refers to the tuning firm AMG, which was established as an official Mercedes division in 1990. This is the first time AMG has been handed a blank sheet to design a road car from the ground up, and one with the expectation that it will be something far more serious than the typical big-engine-and-comfortable-Mercedes AMG recipe.
This time around, the rumour was of an all-out supercar. When the SLS AMG was introduced, its 571 PS (420 kW; 563 horsepower) M159 engine was dubbed “the world’s most powerful naturally aspirated production series engine” by AMG. Indeed, the 6.3-litre engine (based on the M156 block used in the rest of the Mercedes 63 range) was modified to such an extent that AMG assigned it a separate engine code of M159 to reflect the SLS engine’s more than 120 individual components, as well as the addition of a dry-sump lubrication system to handle the car’s high cornering speeds and racing capabilities.
